A lot of film plays with the notion of caging. Much like her mother would refuse to take watered-down bedtime stories as her only source of outside knowledge, she escapes the island but horrifyingly lands right back where her mother started, trapped on a chicken farm. Ramsey's voice performance is one of the few standouts here as they capture something innately desperate, naive, and so pure to their character's origin and family’s roots. But with Molly's growth comes a need to understand her place in the world and why she is where she is. Ginger and Rocky even share a moment where they are pretty amusingly confused at how she's grown so quickly. With the return of Colonel Fowler, yarn enthusiast Babs, brawny Bunty, and the brainy Mac, we also see Molly rapidly age in front of our eyes. In a quick montage, we see not only the island flourish and develop. Dawn of the Nugget hones in on Molly's need to not only experience but also grow and metaphorically and literally spread her wings. But with that precious need to know and be free like her mother, she feels trapped in their island paradise, and while her mother warns of the dangers of humans, she refuses to go into what brought them all to their new home. Ginger and Rocky now have a young chick, Molly, the spitting image and mind of her mother. Tweedy's chicken farm, our favorite chickens make a very Gilligan's Island-styled home on a secluded little island.

A wise decision was made to seed a thoughtful idea early on in the film that picks up almost immediately after the ending of the first. Karey Kirkpatrick, John O'Farrell, and Rachel Tunnard nail down what made an entire generation root for a rag-tag group of ridiculous chickens, but they lose sight of the singular vision that made the original nearly flawless.Ĭhicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is delightful, full stop. It's a story as much about the double-edged swords of the cages we build to protect as it is a rollicking action film tribute. It has been twenty-three years since they last featured their iconic chicken farm escapees, and that time apart has made me fonder of the IP and more critical of their latest adventures. But after seeing their latest film directed by Sam Fell on Netflix, I one hundred percent stand by those comparisons. If you had told me that Aardman Animations was planning to attempt to mash together James Bond, Mission Impossible, and Stepford Wives with their very iconic brand of physical humor and lighthearted tone, I wouldn't have believed you.
